Job Title: Executive Director

Organization: NAMI San Bernardino Area

Location: San Bernardino, CA

Employment Type: Part-Time (20 hours per week), with potential to transition to Full-Time (40 hours per week) contingent upon funding.

About NAMI San Bernardino Area: NAMI San Bernardino Area is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by mental health conditions and their families through support, education, and advocacy. As an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), we strive to promote mental health awareness and provide essential resources to our community.

Position Summary: The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive officer of NAMI San Bernardino Area, providing leadership and strategic direction to advance the organization's mission. The ED is responsible for overseeing programs, fundraising, community outreach, and administrative operations. This role requires a dynamic leader with a passion for mental health advocacy and the ability to manage and grow a non-profit organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Management:
    • Provide visionary and strategic leadership to the organization.
    • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.
    • Manage and support staff and volunteers, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Fundraising and Financial Management:
    • Develop and implement fundraising strategies, including grant writing and donor relations, to secure necessary resources.
    • Prepare and manage the annual budget; ensure financial stability and integrity.
    • Explore opportunities to expand the position to full-time through additional funding.
  • Community Engagement and Advocacy:
    • Serve as the primary spokesperson for NAMI San Bernardino Area, promoting the organization's mission and programs.
    • Build and maintain relationships with community partners, stakeholders, and the media.
    • Advocate for policies and practices that support individuals with mental health conditions and their families.
  • Board Relations:
    • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategic plans.
    • Communicate effectively with the Board, providing timely and accurate information.
    • Assist in identifying and recruiting new board members.
    • The Executive Director reports to the NAMI San Bernardino Area President.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Master’s preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of five years of non-profit leadership experience, preferably in mental health or human services.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, grant writing, and financial management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and engaging with diverse community stakeholders.
  • Respect and compassion for people affected by mental health conditions, with the desire to help others facing related challenges.
  • Maturity and patience to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, while demonstrating empathy to facilitate respectful dialogue with callers who may be in emotional distress or active psychosis. 
  • Passion for NAMI’s mission and a commitment to promoting mental health awareness.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish ability is strongly welcomed.


Compensation: The hourly rate for this part-time position ranges from $36 to $45 per hour, depending on experience and skills. Potential for full-time employment with adjusted compensation if funding allows.
